Q. Child Safety Seat/Restraint Regulations

Laws on the use of child restraints are passed by the states, rather than the Federal Government.

Reports and recommendations on child passenger safety and information on proper use/installation of child safety seats can be found on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) web site at http://www.nhtsa.gov/Safety/CPS

For more information, contact the NHTSA Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or www.nhtsa.dot.gov

The web site http://www.saferoads.org has a fact sheet on Child Passenger Safety which includes a link "Booster Seat Laws by State": http://www.saferoads.org/child-passenger-safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also has a table comparing state laws on child passenger safety, which includes the amount of the fines for violating them: http://www.iihs.org/laws/restraintoverview.aspx

You may also want to contact your state DOT for more details on the laws in your state.

Links to state Departments of Transportation and/or state government web sites are available at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/webstate.htm
