Q. Where can I find information on school bus safety?

Answer

School Bus Safety Resources

Guidelines on school bus safety are provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

School Buses and Safety Belts

On October 15, 2008 former Secretary of Transportation Mary E. Peters issued a final rule on school bus safety. A PDF of the final rule is located at the bottom of this page. Mandates include:

  • Higher minimum seat back heights

  • Required lap-shoulder belts on small buses

  • Standards for belts on large buses

Your state has the final decision on whether or not school buses are equipped with safety belts.
