Q. One Mile of Straight Road Every 5 Miles on Interstate Highways (Myth)

It’s a popular myth that there is one mile of straight road on interstate highways every 5 (or 10) miles, to allow planes to land in an emergency.  This would be impossible in some states, even if there were not overpasses and other obstacles in the way. Here is an article that addresses this myth: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/publicroads/00mayjun/onemileinfive.cfm
