Q. Monthly Airline Baggage Loss and Damage Statistics

Answer

Statistics on mishandled baggage can be found in the Air Travel Consumer Report, published monthly by the DOT's Aviation Consumer Protection Division: http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports/index.htm

Annual statistics can be found in the February issue each year.

Only air carriers with at least 1 % of domestic, scheduled-service passenger revenue are required to file this data with the US DOT.

For a list of airlines required to report this data during the 2012 calendar year, see  http://www.bts.gov/programs/airline_information/accounting_and_reporting_directives/technical_directive_21.html

For earlier years, see the "Technical Directives - On-Time Reporting" at http://www.bts.gov/programs/airline_information/accounting_and_reporting_directives/technical_directive.html

Reporting requirements for mishandled baggage can be found in 14 CFR 234.6.
